Govstack uses relative URLs for media files. This allows you to move documents and images in the media section without breaking hyperlinks, or causing broken image warnings. However, this URL is unique to each file and is created when the file is uploaded. Deleting a file in the system removes this relative URL, breaking all references to it. Uploading a new file with the same name creates a new relative URL and does not restore these connections.
To replace a document or image it is better to upload new content to the file. Follow the steps below to replace a file site-wide without breaking it's links to web pages.

To replace a document or image in a media folder and maintain it's links to the website, you need to:
- Select the 'Media' tab from the Govstack main menu and locate the file to replace
- Click the name of the file you want to replace. This will open the file details. Do not select the file's thumbnail or icon
- Click on the ‘Remove file(s)’ link below the article or image thumbnail
- Select the 'Click here to upload' button and choose the replacement file form your local drive or network. The new document will upload
- Once you have added the document, click 'Save' to complete the process. This will replace the file throughout the website
- If you would like to change the name of the document you can edit the name field at the top of the page and re-save
Do not delete files if they are currently in use on the website. This will break all links to the file and require you to upload a replacement and restore all links by hand on an instance by instance basis.
